Cucumis x hytivus

* Cucumis x hytivus is the new species developed by crossing a
cucumber (Cucumis x sativus) with a melon (Cucumis hystrix) using
traditional breeding techniques. USDA-ARS botanist Joseph Kirkbride
in Beltsville, Md., collaborated with hort. professor Chen Jin-Feng at
Nanjing Ag. Univ. in Nanjing, China, to develop the hybrid.
Cucumbers and melons are susceptible to a number of bacterial, fungal,
viral and insect diseases that reduce crop yield and quality. Using the
new cross, scientists hope to discover resistance to many of these
diseases to breed improved cucumbers and melons. joe@nt.arsgrin.gov
