Re: PA update (more pumpkin horror stories)
Marv, Larry, and Gang,
So far so good with the stem split up here in northern PA, the fruit is growing 1-2 inches a day now in circumverence, instead of the 3-4 I was getting, but just topped 500 pounds. For the stem split I have been pasting with captan, but want that to dry inside completely, so I have hung a mini personal fan from the sunhut roof by a spiedie skewer. You can paste with captan all day long, but if you dont get it dry, this wont stop. I have Pumpkinologist and famed 1998 NTGPGA champ Mark Elsbree watching my patch for the next three days, so I have no worries, as I am on vacation for 3 more days.
Sorry to hear of the rough times down south in PA, this rain is what I wanted last season on a steady basis, because of our drought, now this year I want some of the hot days with less rain, uuugggghh!! It seems some people are never happy!! heehee..
In case some of you have never seen a catastrophic stem split, check out the Y2k update page on http://www.pgpga.com/2000update.htm . After checking out some of the other memebers, go to my name (Rocky Rockwell) and click on the stories highlighted sections.
