The Sheet
George mentioned that he places a sheet over his pumpkin while the pumpkin is
in the shade-shelter. George, and any other sheeters, do you find that this
reduces cantalouping, the lines and cracks cause by rapid growth, on the
fruit? The reason I ask is that I have one fruit, which grows in shade from
2PM on each day, which I have covered with a sheet rather build a sun shade
hut, and it has a very beautifully, unscarred surface. Of course it is not
growing like Quasimodo, but nevertheless....
And speaking of Quasi - more hair pulling. Not only am I awaiting the day the
vine will pull the stem like a corkscrew opening a bottle (that's for the
Napa Valley people!), now Quasi has developed a Dill "spot", not a ring. It
is a depression which only covers about three ribs. When I tap on the area
the sound is not a deep comforting thud. I wonder how thin the wall is there.
Has anyone any tips for harvesting and transporting fruit with thin spots. (
I know I am being optimistic, given what I said about the cork and all.)
Oh, Quasi is at 283 OTT today.
