List,
I currently have aHandy 724 which I would have normally taken off by
now ...but as it is the lone remaining fruit ..I figure I have nothing
to lose..so why not see what you can do with it..
Here is the problem...Saturday morning I noticed a Stem end
split...right under the stem...very hard to see...In fact I have not
really even seen all of it yet...it also has a matching split showing as
a hairline crack on the top side of the stem to pumpkin ....Which is
best..... captan powder......or sulfur powder....I'm currently dusting
every morning (the last 2) with the captan....I kinda stuff the crack
using a small paint brush!! I also have added a fan to help dry the
area around the crack...it appears to be moist...after I get home from
work!!!
I would not think it is saveable but I have seen Rocky's this season
and mine is not nearly this severe..(yet) and I have seen in the giant
pumpkin books those large fruits that have the stem separations....So
they must have went thru something like this to get to that point ...the
Holland 827 In Book #1 rings a bell.... Thqanks for the thoughts

Stem end splits are not usually fatal because it is the thickest part of the
fruit. I would use Captan until 3 weeks before harvest than switch to Sulfur
which is much less toxic to the Pumpkin handlers. I saved a 500+ Pumpkin
many years ago that had a 5" Long 2" wide by 3" deep split by the end of the
season. That pumpkin lasted well past Halloween after picking. Good luck.
