Pumpkin Growth

I have one pumpkin on the vine right now that measures 54" in circumference.
It was growing at a rate of 3" or more a day until week before last. The
vine still looks perfectly healthy and so does the pumpkin stem. For most of
this week it has slowed down to growing less than 2 inches a day. In this
time period the night temperatures have only ranged in the mid fifties at
best here in Virginia. I have been giving it plenty of water, miracle grow,
and also a granular fertilizer of an 18-8-18 mix. I also have a smaller
pumpkin on another vine that is growing at a pretty fast rate (3" or so a
day) and is currently a little smaller than a basketball. I have been
thinking about cutting it off but the growth at this point looks good. If I
get rid of this smaller pumpkin will the growth rate on my big one pick up
noticeably or is it the cold nights affecting it? Is it normal for the
growth to cut back like this when it reaches this size?

Thanks,
Mark Fowler
