I have found the stem on my plants to be hollow from the trunk of the plant all the way out to the pumpkin fruit.  I would think this allows the pumpkin fruit to gets it's air through the stem all the way to the trunk, kinda of like a shock absorber.  I always assumed that the pumpkin received it's air from this hollow stem not through the skin of the pumpkin it's self.  Your theory is intriguing though and may have merit.
