Growth vs. Temperature Reversed?

I always thought that pumpkins like it warm to hot.  Since I'm from southern Canada I mean 15-20C (60-70F) at night and 25-30C (80-90F) during the day.  Over the last couple of weeks the temperatures have gone from cool-cold (6-10C at night and 18-22C during the day) to warm-hot (14-18C at night and 27-32C during the day).  The growth on my largest two pumpkins stayed steady during the cold period with one averaging 10-12lbs a day and the other averaging 18-22lbs a day.  I have kept the soil moisture up with extra water now that it is hot but my growth has come crashing down over the last two days (4-5lbs and 8-10lbs).  Does this make sense?  Both plants look healthy and close inspection of both plants show no problems.

They are not the biggest pumpkins around but they both should break my personal best of 318lbs.
