Interesting Individual
In trying to attract growers to our SE Weigh off we came
across an article from the
Chattanooga newspaper about a farmer growing 400-450 lb.
pumpkins from off the
shelf seeds. I tracked down this gentleman, his name is Hugh
Pless, he lives and farms
in extreme NW Georgia. He is within a few miles of Tennessee
and Alabama. Over
the years he has developed his own seeds from originally
Prizewinner pumpkins. We
talked to him about the internet and seeds. Mike Nepereny
and I will work with Hugh
this winter to find seeds with the traits Hugh wants. Hugh
has vowed to return next year
and show Mike and I how big pumpkins are really grown. He
said he was going home
to talk to his girls about growing bigger. He routinely
leases 200 pound pumpkins for
$100.00 and is a commercial pumpkin grower. I believe Hugh
when he says he will
return with a big one next year. The Weigh off effort was
worth meeting Hugh Pless.

privately. Hugh's daughter-in-law
is computer trained and I will work with her to get Hugh on
the net.
Hugh is a most interesting gentleman.
