If your split is large enough to fit a pencil, then I assure you air and 
contaminants have entered the cavity. Remember, spores are airborne and the 
air carries all kinds of bacteria and fungus.

Not being pessimistic, but realistic here. John Spahr offered a great plan to 
fix your fruit, but it is a big gamble. If the plug doesn't work, you'll have 
no way of knowing because your fruit will rot from the inside out. It will 
suddenly go down, seemingly overnight.

I agree with Neps, plug it if you want, but get it to the scales in one piece 
before you have to shovel the sloppy mess into a wheelbarrow with no weight 
estimate. 

It is a great pumpkin and you deserve lots of credit for your efforts.
