NO I'M THE BIGGEST !!!!

    List
Here is a short Torrance report just to let you know how things are coming
along in sunny southern CA.
791 Glasier is having to fend off a great challenge from the 986 Hester.
It is a real battle of the bulge...
The 791 Glasier has taken on its mature shape and looks like what they
call the "pepper shape" high shoulders then taper to a narrow blossom.
It was pollinated on July 3 rd and has had its up and downs with growth. The
stem was slightly damaged during vine positioning and I am still batteling
with that but as of 8/15/01 taped out to an estimated OTT of 438 lbs. It is
still growing slow but I at least am seeing growth. I think the pollination
with the 723 Bobier will give the offspring the larger leaves and heavier
runners this plant lacks.

The 986 Hester* is the contender in the patch with a pollination date of
July 11 this one is on a good run. Tall round in shape thick stem, leaves and
runners. Nice buttery yellow color and growing quite fast it as of 8/15/01
taped OTT to an estimated 414 lbs
this one in the last two days has formed deep creases in its ribs and the
rest of the ribs seem to be creasing also. The round smooth shape is giving
in to a mature appearance and I think it is beautiful !!! the pollination
with the 723 Bobier will hopefully re in-force the heavy leaves and thick
runners along with the BIG PUMPKINS I hope this cross comes out as good as I
want it to....

OK those of you who love the GREENIES here is the report of "THE GIFT"
547 Kournikakis (935 Lloyd selfed) Yes it looks like a watermelon in color
but has almost EXACTLY the same shape as the 547 had. Nice and round really
tall but getting a blocky appearance. This one was planted in a hole dug in
some sandy soil that I call my lawn. half shaded all day and only watered on
the trunk. This one is on a great unexpected run of weight gain 68 lbs in 2
1/2 days from 273 OTT to 341 OTT
but the shape has changed and the rib I have been measuring on for the
circumference has been dwarfed by the rib below it so don't know if I should
change where I measure? there is about a four inch difference cir between
them.
The Gift is leaning against its 7 inch long stem and it worries me a little
but I have not figured how to remedy this so for now it just leans!
As it goes for weather in Torrance it finally hit 80 degrees and last
night was in the high 60's so hopefully we will see some good growth in the
next few weeks. WISH US TORRANCE GROWERS LUCK !!!! Take care all and if you
have and questions queries or complaints I would love to hear them... Good
luck ALL...
