I got one that's a whopping 8".

Brian, Patty and all,

It seems that most will get to this size (8-10 inches) regardless of pollination success or failure. I would say that after10 days it probably is not going to go, much like AG's that get to softball size with or without pollination success.

I checked my records from 2000 when I had the 97 incher and it was 11 inches on Aug. 22 and hit the 97inch mark 33 days later on Sept 25th. I had a 84 inch gourd also that year that was about 4 days ahead of the 97 and had growth for 34 days although the last 3-4 days only gained about 1.5 in. total. I was pumpkinless in 2000 but the gourd kept me in high spirits. I'm without a pumpkin again this season due to disease that wiped me out so I'm hoping history will repeat on the gourd trellis.

Last year I had two gourds @ 87 and 70 inches that were set even later but didn't get the length as the earlier sets from the previous year. I think it's preferable to get them set so that the approx. 30 day growth period runs through the longest days of summer but so far I've not been able to do that.

Bottom line:
If you have gourds on now and get one to pollinate in the next week or so, I believe you have a good shot a getting one to a respectable length. I can say with certainty that when one does get started,,,,,, you will have no doubt that it is on the move.

Good luck to the long gourd growers out there. My guess is,,,, you first year growers are gonna fall in love with 'em.
