Long Gourds
Long Gourds grow from secondary vines. Allow the main to get as long
as it takes to fill your frame or growing area with secondaries.
Pinch off the end of the main because you will not need more
secondaries than your area can support. As in AG's pruning the vines
will help keep the tangle under some control, seems to direct the
growth energy to the few fruit you allow, and will allow spraying to
reach the leaf surface better. Aphids are a problem. Gourds do not
like direct sprinkler watering. Gourds, per what I have read,
pollinate at night. How this happens without bees seems to be a ?.
Some say slight wind, some say ants, some say the bad bugs are
helpful/hurtful. And I say so what if you get a plant with 3-4 90
inch gourds!
Great book is,
Gourds in Your Garden, by Ginger Summit.
Every one have a really great day and most of all try to make your
garden fun to have.
