RE: Tap Roots

Do what Glenn just wrote; assuming you can get to the pumpkin's main vine,
if it isn't buried, run your hand under it for a couple feet or so before &
after the pumpkin and you will feel roots growing down at every leaf node
which provide additional anchoring & nutrients to the plant. If the vine's
buried, you'll have to uncover the vine in this area. Sometimes it is safer
to run a knife parallel to the ground to cut the root than it is to just try
to lift the root out of the ground. I personally think, if it can be
pulled/raised from the ground safely without putting stress on the vine
while doing it, it may still grow down to the soil to still provide
nutrients, however you may have do this procedure again in the future; this
is just my opinion based on growth slowing down slightly after cutting the
tap roots which provided additional nutrients. Maybe raising the vine
without cutting the roots and mounding up loose rich compost where the tap
roots are might help. I've even heard extremes such as baggies filled with
rich soil or compost for these roots to dangle in. Are there any "extreme"
people out there?

cut the tap roots in close proximity to the pumpkin so the vine can rise
up as the pumpkin grows to avoid stem stress.
