Hi Wendy!
Turn the vine away from the pumpkin at almost a 90 degree angle. Do this in the afternoon when the vine isn't so brittle. I cover the vine with a little dirt and always pinch the end of the side shoot off, that comes from the main vine right behind the pumpkin. By turning the vine it give the pumpkin less stress on the vine and stem as it grows up and lifts the vine a foot or two off the ground. As the pumpkin starts to get big, feel the vine to make sure it is loose. If needed cut as many of the tap roots that grow from the bottom of the vine in the area of the pumpkin. (pull up on the vine and see what is holding from lifting the take a small knife and cut them off).
Good Luck
It is getting close to pumpkin time!
