RE: Tomatoes

I know that you wanted actual numbers, and I didn't keep track of the dates. But this is my first year growing tomatoes, and I, in my innocence, planted 28 plants of different varieties. They were so small; I didn't realize what I was getting into. In any case, I was amazed at how long it took for the tomatoes to ripen! Now that they are ripening, they are ripening at a rate that is diffucult to keep up with. I am giving them away, canning them, and stacking them around the house. But from the time they were blossoming until the first one was ripe seems like it must have been a couple of months. Also, the cherry tomatoes (red) came first, then the orange ones, then the yellow cherry tomatoes, and now, finally the full-sized red ones. The elongated varieties and the "black" ones are still not ripe, and are in fact still growing. (that is, the tomatoes are still getting bigger, so they probably won't begin to ripen for a while.) I read somewhere that if you put a banana peel near the tomatoes it will quicken the ripening process. I haven't tried that though.

Marv, 30 days rings a bell, but forgot if that's blossom to ripe fruit or
developing fruit to ripe fruit. I didn't get most of mine in the ground til
the first week of June here in Buffalo and my first ripe tomato was 7/31,
albeit a cherry brandywine. I have been getting ripe beefsteak-size
heirlooms the last couple weeks but only a couple dozen over that timespan
off 35+ large-style fruit plants. I'm assuming you are either questioning
your plants' output or you are wondering if your blossoms will be tomatoes
before the first frost. Type/size & conditions/growing methods can be
factors, too, plus, you can top off your plants to speed up ripening of your
fruits instead of growing more green vine. If all else fails, there's always
that $15 bottle of Ethephon...

Does anyone know how long it takes from the time you see a blossum on a
tomato plant until you get a ripe tomato? Just wondering and hoping maybe
one pumpkin person might know something about tomatoes.
