The warmer pumpkin does not grow faster, instead it RIPENS faster.  Ripening
is something you want to put off as long as possible, which one reason that
most growers shade their pumpkin.  By keeping the pumpkin cool, you inhibit
early ripening and increase the number of growing days for your pumpkin.
This is why growers in hot climates have such a hard time growing giants;
the heat ripens the fruit early and often stops the pumpkin's growth
prematurely.
