unknown bug

Does anyone know what the black bugs that chew holes in cantelope are called and what to spray for them? They are slightly bigger than a cuc bettle - maybe a little more slender and have about 4 faint white spots on them. They seem to attack cantelope right at the time when they are ripe - so not seem to bother them till then.
