The main reason that the basketball size ones abort
is because of a pollination failure. The temperature
and amount of moisture present at the time of pollination
are extremely important. Pumpkins pollinate well between
70 and 85 degrees, however good pollination can occur
at slightly lower or higher temperatures. If either the
male or female is slightly damp at this time,
fruit set will be difficult.
True, some females, because of their genetic disposition,
are very difficult to pollinate. Good luck trying to set
fruit on one of these plants on a damp chilly morning !!
This ain't no easy game we're playing !!
