Whats in a name

This question from a newbie is probably a little, no not a little, but quite a bit ahead of myself.  I would like to know, "when do you get to name a pumpkin your growing as your own?"  I ask this question with the greatest humility in mind, but I would like to name a pumpkin after my Dad who is ill.  Thanks
