Howard -
Great account of your fair! We are one year behind and
I'd like any info or advice on how you'll arrange and organize next years event.
I've entered large pumpkins for the last few years at our Ravalli Co. Fair
(Hamilton, MT) and have taken the blue ribbon every time. This year I am
organizing a weigh off in October, but I'm going to visit the fair people next
week regarding a giant event for the August fair next year. I like to think of
it as the tickler for the Oct. event, and a good way to get more exposure and
involve the 4Hers.
So, any wisdom to share would be greatly appreciated.
Things like the arrangement, access, timing? Usually we just drop off our
entries and come back after the ribbons and premiums have been awarded. I'd
imagine they'll need and expect a bit more help - right?
Thanks in advance -
Kim
Giant Pumpkins
Rule!! -----Original Message-----
From: owner-pumpkins@hort.net [mailto:owner-pumpkins@hort.net]On Behalf Of Harold Jorgensen Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2002 7:45 AM To: pumpkins Subject: Idaho State Fair results Well it was pretty funny to watch
the ladies with the clip boards stress over how the heck they were going to Move
these pumpkins, and then all the suggestions that came
about.
When they tried to pick up
Brian's they almost dropped it off of the Jerry rigged tarp set up, but being
the helpful guy I am, I grabbed hold and saved it from rolling off and hitting
the floor. (your welcome Brian. LOL) everyone in the building was watching
all of this happen and there was this big gasp and then silence as
everyone held there breath, then the sigh of relief.( it really went quiet there
for a moment).
Next they brought in this big
forklift with a pallet and plywood on it and took it to the livestock
scales, the scales they had in the building was smaller than the
pumpkins.
After they got their system down
everything went great.
The main question was how do you
get them that big, I told them that Brian used steroids and Cliff and I used
waste water from the local nuclear plant and then a lot of love, fertilizer and
stress!!
we also told the Lady in charge
that this thing is only going to get bigger and to wait till next
year.
By the time it was all over they
were deciding that there would be a new category and they were deciding where
the new pumpkin area would be and what the new display would look
like.
O.K., enough of that, now for the
results,
1st Place and grand champion,
Brian Cristensen, 472#.
2nd place and disappointed
person, Harold Jorgensen, 340#.
3rd place and one heck-of-uh-nice
Guy, Cliff Warren, 240#.
4th place Robin Henrie,
200#.
5th place Camile Bellnap
112#.
1st place Squash went to
an all around good guy Harold Jorgensen, 180#.
And the first place cabbage went
to ( if I don't mention this she would beat me up)
The beautiful and Lovely Lady,
Polly Jorgensen 12.5#
We will be going back down today
to take pictures of the display and we will post some
tomorrow.
To Everyone, Grow-em-Huge and don't let the stress
killyuh!!!!!
Harold.
