Hi TJ Congrads!
First of all wait till late afternoon and curve the main vine away from the
side that the pumpkin is on and put a little dirt over over the vine to hold it
in place. This will allow the vine to be able to lift up easier than a
straight vine.
Next Pinch off the end of the side shoot that is coming out right next to the
pumpkin. This will only add to vine stress.
Wait until you have a few pumpkins growing before you cut off the tap root
that is coming out of the bottom of the vine right at the base of the stem of
the pumpkin.
I do not cut this until I am sure this is the fastest growing pumpkin and the
one I am going to keep. If it is then lightly pull up on the vine at the stem
and take a knife and cut the root so the vine can lift up as the pumpkin
grows.
Good Luck
Bill
