Re: Pruning and lifting

Kathie,

I suppose I do not know the exact kind of pumpkin I am growing, I am planning a separate lot dedicated to my seed for next year and I will do it properly. It is about half a mile from any other pumpkin patch and near a large field tile bed collection point so I will have lots of water if needed.
For all the pumpkins I've tracked I have hand pollinated, I was quite surprised at my success. Yet 3 had succumbed to the excessive moisture this summer though five remain. The rest have resulted from the bee's and I do seem to have a lot of ants in the main patch. The smaller patch is an eight year old chicken manure pile which is full of every type of insect imaginable, why this morning I was bitten by a nice large black and yellow spider, they always hurt.

My pallet question was a little early in the season I suppose, but I think the tarp method is looking better and better.

Thank you,

Peter Kaulback

Peter,
Are you growing Atlantic Giants or some other kind? AGs don't make very
good pie, in my opinion, because of being so watery (I use 1/2 AG
pumpkin to 1/2 yam when I do, to kind of even things out).
It's never too late to prune.
Have you been hand pollinating or just leaving it up to the bees?
Is it safe to place them on pallets? You mean, safe for the pallet? One
hundred pounds is a nice size - they won't slip through the cracks. A
tarp is real nice, and I believe the Pumpkin Nook sells them.
Good luck!
Kathie
