Rain picks up atmospheric Nitrogen as it falls; hence the enhanced growth.
Said Nitrogen won't last long in a barrel so you'd want to use it quickly.
The same affect can be had by injecting trace quantities of low biuret urea
into tap water.
Overhead watering creates the advantages of cooling to some degree but can
increase fungal disease pressure. Here in CT we can't grow Powdery Mildew
free plants without fungicides so overhead watering is fine. We just need
to keep the fungicides current.
Drip irrigation or soakers pose installation & maintenance issues but really
is the better way to water if you have the resources.

I have been told to get plenty of it out there, but how leaves me some
questions.
Most of what I have read on the matter leads me in the direction of
watering at the soil level with soaker hoses.
I really like the idea of watering from above with an oscillating
sprinkler, for the convenience and efficiency of it.
I saw on "Lords of the Gourds"
(http://www.pbs.org/previews/lordsofthegourd/) some heavy hitters
watering from rain barrels and using the aerial approach. I am assuming
that this is okay so long as you are treating the plants with a
fungicide.
Some day I want to set up the rain barrels and pump from them to the
ground (rain water produces so much more growth) but for now it's city
water and a wand walking to each plant. I know I am not getting as much
out there as I should.
What are the methods the rest of you are using and is there any thought
on the oscillating sprinkler vs. fungicide thing?
Thanks
