I've seen stem splits go six inches into the meat and not make
it to the cavity. I've also seen the stem split clean through
where you could look through it and the fruit is still
official. Remember that the wall around the stem is usually
the thickest part of the pumpkin. The key is to keep the split
area dry and rot free. Captan and a fan plus protection from
water intrusion. Remove any brown or soft flesh in the crack by
scraping and then cleanse with 10% bleach solution, and dust
with capton. Nothing I know of will stop the splitting, but
if it is kept dry and rot free there is still hope.
