Water softeners (if sodium chloride is used) take out exactly what the plants need most: Ca and Mg and put in what they should not have: Na.
What I suggest is to use potassium chloride for water softening however, I would not use any softened water on your plants.
Our bodies are just like plants. Plants hate sodium and stunt their growth so we should reject Na also. I actually changed my diet to low sodium once I learned about my issues and what sodium does to plants.
