I just received an email from a fellow grower here in VT who threw out his
0-0-60 because it blew out his pumpkins, too. I'm sticking to low K
fertilizers such as seaweed emulsion and the like from now on. Steve M.

Like Tom I favor sulfate of potash (0-0-50) over muriate (0-0-60). However
where salt is a concern (horse manure) but Potash has been confirmed
necessary (tissue test), you cannot beat using potassium nitrate for extreme
low salt & high solubility.
The tissue test is the sure fire way to confirm.

Steve,
If you want a no fail way of telling what your plant might need or not need,
get a tissue test, I was able to see what the nutrient levels are in my
plant and know that I am doing ok without heavy ferts.

Thanks, Tom. I have a heavy clay soil which I try to amend with lots of
composted horse manure, and a lot of anything else I can get my hands on.
Since clay soils are supposed to be already high in potassium, it just
dawned
on me why that AG blew out last year. I might do better to stick to
20-20-20
or something similar and cut waaaayyyy back on K-heavy fertilizers. Haste
makes waste--as in a big pile of dead pumpkin. Slow and steady wins the
weigh-off. Steve M.

Steve,
It really depends on your soil and plants. That said, 0-0-60 muriate of
potash is very high in salts, I highly recommend 0-0-50 if you want to use
something with that percentage of potash, I will be using a 3-18-18.

How much potassium (K) is recommended for the next
2 months? I'm using 2
tablespoons of 0-0-60 dissolved in a 20 gallon sprayer as
a temporary measure
once a week. My alpha dog is (according to GPC tables) @400
lbs and I don't
want to blow it (pun intended) as I did last year. Suggestions
from
consistent heavy hitters greatly appreciated. Steve M.
