Split Stem

I noticed this morning, now that it has quit raining that the stem split in two areas, under and on top, the split on top is about 1/2" - 3/4" wide and the one on the bottom about the same. I poured Daconil concentrate into the split, it naturally came running out the bottom, I dabbed around with a small paint brush to get better coverage. My question to the group, am I just better off leaving the splits open? Or should I wrapped the stem, fill it with something like powdered Captan or just resign myself that the split is inevitably going to start causing rot and from there the pumpkin goes down.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. RussBurlington
