Jim,
It seems that two of us in the group have been having some issues with
stems. Since I am in the nursery/greenhouse business, I have access to
Daconil (chlorothalonil) concentrate. I have in the past used it right from
the jug to paint onto small lesions on the stem without any problem. Since
I have a major stem crack, top and bottom on probably the biggest pumpkin I
have ever had at this stage of the game, I am trying to save it. So I
poured the Daconil concentrate directly into the stem split and dabbed
around inside in order to get good coverage. Will it work? I don't know,
but after a couple of days I don't see where the Daconil appears to be
causing an sort of burn or problem to the stem or the flesh of the fruit. I
normally would not recommend to anyone to use Daconil at this strenght
unless its a matter of trying to keep the pumpkin from ending up on the
compost pile.
If the stem on your pumpkin is continuously getting wet from rain or
watering, a good practice would be to spray it down with a fungicide like
Daconil, weekly, but more in line with the instructions from the bottle.
Good Luck in your growing.
Russ
