Organic Material

Sorry to hear so many others are also having problems. This is the time of
year when everything either goes well or all is lot, huh?

I read a thread here yesterday about percentages of Organic Material (OM) in
the soil. Don't laugh, but mine is almost 100%. I dug a giant hole, backed
the trailer up and dumped in 5 cubic yards of mushroom compost. I mixed in
a little soil, but not too much. Maybe 5 or 10 percent at the most. All my
other vegetables absolutely thrive on this treatment. My pumpkins went
crazy up until about 2-3 weeks ago when all growth came to a grinding
near-halt. I don't think it is the soil, I'm fairly sure my fertilizing plan
is what did me in.

My question is, since organic soil holds so much nutrition and is generally
better at holding moisture, why not go heavy rather than light on it? I
have great drainage under my compost and the pumpkin vines seemed very
happy. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this again next year?
