RE: Jack is Dead

Steve, Here you go...
I grow field pumpkins, and winter squash for supplemental income...and I
enjoy it. We have sandy to "black" loam here. The immediate substrate is
fine and dark. The overall soil structure is glacial till. We have deep
lakes in the area with pockets of excellent farming ground. The crops are
corn, soy beans and wheat. The family down the road are fine people. They
have sons and daughters, cousins and other kids that help me farm, help my
brother with his greenhouse/landscaping business. The patch I have
referenced to was literally a cattle paddock. They cleaned it out (as the
cattle are now in the freezer) dumped topsoil in a pile and planted Jepsen's
AG. I gave them some basic advise (why the Hell listen to me ) and Morgan
went with it. The area was saturated with steer manure. I brought over a
truckload of lakeweed that had washed ashore and composted it under the
mound. Morgan's vines are very impressive. They are 30ft x 30 ft.....one
plant. The problem we (she) has now, is the fruit is on a slope and pulling
the vine downhill.
Amazingly Steve, many people here are prejudice against the Amish. My family
is Catholic ( sorry pumpkineers to bring religion into this) but we cherish
the Amish contribution to the community. You should see and taste the mlons,
tomatoes, baked goods, canned fruit and meat these people produce.

Can you share with us what the soil is like there for the pumpkin? What are
the crops they rotate? Do they use manure? I'm really curious about how
the
Amish farm/garden. Steve M.

Jack, measuring in at @512 lbs, blew out at the bottom sometime today while
I
was at a growers BBQ.  I need suggestions:  best way to get the seeds out;
best way to cut pumpkin up; name of patron saint or hindu deity of giant
pumpkins(I have a 377-pounder left I'm trying to cure of stem rot). Steve M.
