Hollow Pumpkin

Dissected my 500-pounder this morning--it was totally hollow inside!!! The
skin went from 6 inches thick on the top to 1/8th inch thick at the bottom.
What the heck would cause this? My biggie last year also collapsed, but only
the very bottom was hollow. I thought the cause was too much potassium and
not enough shade, but I now believe I've been off on the wrong track. Lack of
calcium, fertilization with self/sibling from same parent, or what? Steve M.
