I totally agree with you on the subject of Sevin being basically useless
against common pumpkin insect pests. It does kill ants, however, and probably
some other insects, but as for squash bugs and cucumber beetles, Sevin is
worse than useless.
On the contrary, I think the buggers actually enjoy being sprayed with Sevin.

If you apply later in the day, once the heat and sun is starting to go down
you should be okay. I still advocate a double attack if you are seeing more
than a few cuke beetles. The Bayer Advantage containing imidichlorprin
(Merit) is good to use as a drench and then you can spray Triazicide as well.
I use Triazicide on about 100 Hyrbrid T Roses and have never experienced any
spray damage as long as I spray later in the evening. Even the open blooms
show know damage. Sevin has been around for a long time. My belief is that
Sevin is no longer very effective because insects have gain resistance to it.
