Re: OTT weight charts

Hi, David!

Saw your reply to Debbie R and was happy to see you again. How're things in your patch?

I thought you might be interested in the reply I sent DR off-list:

Hi, Debbie!

Whoever it was who told you that it doesn't matter is right. When we took my "second-best" pumpkin to weigh-off in 2008, we were stunned that she weighed 901.5 pounds. She was 19 percent heavy. We had taken my best fruit to Elk Grove two weeks earlier, where it was only pounds away (792 pounds on the scales) from its tape estimate of 785.

The tape is great for charting growth rates on a given pumpkin. Given the vast variation in pumpkin shapes and the location of their lumps, and the tendency of so many to grow at angles instead of straight across, the tape is barely better than a fortune teller, especially, as the one grower pointed out, when one fruit will have below average wall thickness and another will be so thick she has barely any cavity.

Good luck! It will be interesting to know your final results.

Kathie

So what's the verdict on weight charts?

I have been using DL's OTT weight charts and recently found one from GPC,
dated
2008, that differs slightly in weight. What is recommended?

Debbie
