Re: Squash Leaf Curl Virus or "Curly Top"

George,

Thank you for this very helpful post.

Can this leaf curl virus be transmitted by diabrotica and/or squash bugs?

Can it be transmitted to pinot noir wine grapes?

After being forced out of the Giant Pumpkin Growing Sport many years ago by a soil born disease, I believe I have identified the Culprit, Lab tests next year will tell for sure. I could not figure out why after 3 years growing Tomatoes the soil still contained a virus. Squash Leaf Curl Virus or Curly Top, infects Tomatoes, Squash, Beets, Beans and many other crops, that would explain it. Photos look identical to what I have seen in Squash & Pumpkins over the years. In the mid 1990's I think it was transmitted by seeds from the Pacific Northwest to my garden. Articles list it as a problem
in the Western US.

Info:

Variety Susceptibility Observed:

Atlantic Giant: High Risk
Essex Hybrid Squash: Somewhat Resistant
Marblehead Squash: Somewhat Resistant
Waltham Butternut Squash: No Disease Ever Observed
Most varieties of Tomatoes: Resistant
Frosty Bush Pumpkin: Highly Resistant
Baby Bear Pumpkin: Highly Resistant
Tropical Gourds (Fuzzy Leaf Types, non scientific description): No Disease
Ever Observed
Standard Gourds: Somewhat Resistant, Exception Turks Turban High Risk
Most Large Field Pumpkin Varieties: High Risk
Acorn Squash: High Risk
One To Many Pumpkin: Somewhat Resistant

Please pass this along to other Pumpkin Posts for Info & comments.

Thanks
George
