To add a bit more to what others have said....
Take care not to scratch the skin of the pumpkin. Mold and bacteria can
then
get inside and wreak havoc. Let it harden off before moving if it
hasn't yet (probably not).
A pumpkin can last a long time IF no "bugs" can get inside to the wet
interior.
Congrats on a 300 pounder. Even that size is rather impressive
especially when you try
to move it!!! I would say cover it and just cut it from the main vine
if it has stopped growing
and especially if the stem is soft. Soft indicates decay and bacterial
growth. You may
need to cut off the stem beyond where the soft part ends to prevent
bacteria getting inside
through the stem. Then sterilize the end with bleach or H2O2
(peroxide) and let it dry
and maybe even cover it to keep bacteria out. Best of luck.

I am fairly new to growing pumpkins, (3 years), and this year I have a
personal best, estimated at about 300 lbs. The stem has gone soft, my
baby isn't growing anymore. I'd like to keep the pumpkin until
Halloween, can anybody give me advice on how and what to do? I live in
Japan, it is still very very hot, and will remain so well into
October. Easily over 90 every day.
Thanks,
