I also wonder about the growth rates people are discussing here. When you
refer to gains of 6 or 8 inches in a day is that overall with a three way
measurement or just the circumference? Mine grew at a rate of about 2
inches in circumference a day early on but that has slowed down considerably
and they are now at about 1 inch a day. We have had a month of warm dry
weather here in Western Washington and I had expected this would be
conducive to rapid grow but so far I haven't seen it. It's been slow and
steady but my 2 largest pumpkins pollinated 7-4 and 7-6 both measure 68" in
circumference around the stem to blossom equator. Does this seem about
right for this stage in their development? Last year was my first effort
and I got a late start so I don't really have much to go on other than what
I have read here. I'm pleased with what I have when I go out to the patch
but when I sit hear reading about these baby elephants other people are
growing it makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful that other than an early broken vine and a
blown out youngster I've had no disasters and have 4 good pumpkins going on
my two plants.
As for yours Chris all I can say is make sure your getting them enough water
in a steady supply. I know we had thunderstorms in Seattle a couple days
ago but there has been no rain on my patch in Kent in a month. I have been
watering every day. Also every pumpkin I have pollinated since July 15 has
aborted. So as long as yours are shiney and healthy there is still hope.
On another note I sent a check in to the PNWGPG a couple weeks ago so I
could participate in the weight off at Carnation in October and so far
haven't heard anything back. Does anyone know who checks that PO Box and
how often? I just want to know it didn't get lost in the snail mail.
Thanks for putting up with this long winded message.

Hello all,
I am feeling frustrated that my pumpkins are slow to get started. Can
someone tell me approximately how many days post pollination it takes
before you can start to see daily growth? I keep reading about you people
with 70-80 inch. growth in a very short time. I think I pollinated around
july 20, and I have shiny healthy looking soft ball size fruit.
Thanks,
