A pumpkin growing friend from back in Nova Scotia would often
chain smoke and rub his belly at the same time while talking pumpkins
with me (it's not easy; similar to trying to rub your belly and pat your
head at the same time). The rate of this habit would increase as the time
until the weigh-off drew near. I'm not sure whether this was a
superstition or just a nervous twitch. Regardless, it seemed to work as
he was often had a winner. In hindsight, I think the additional CO2 he
was placing in the air around his plants positively influenced their
growth rate.
