exploding pumpkins!!

Greetings,

What a shock I had last night to come home and find one my better
pumpkins had exploded. I had read a lot about this phenom. here on the
computer but thought that it was paranoid pumpkin talk. Does anyone know
what causes this? Is it a sign of a soil nutrient/fertalizer problem?
It was as if the fruit was made of safety glass, and someone had shot a
bullet at it.
It also amazes me what internal preasure these things have. The
other day when cutting some extras from the vine, I sliced open a pumpkin
to inspect the inside. When the knife went in the fruit seemed to
immediately split open. Oh well, I just hope this doesn't happen too many
more times.
