Re: Growth

AnnaMarie & Greg.

Ok, if we can all agree that there is no finite answer to your question and
that all pumpkins have a somewhat different growth rate we are off to a
good start.

I am looking at an article by Bob Marcellus titled Growth Rates for World
Class Pumpkins, sent to me by the Ottawa St. Lawrence Growers Assoc.

In this article there is a actual growth rate chart for 8 world class
pumpkins over time. The growth curve chart starts from Aug. 1st.

These 8 pumpkins on Aug. 10th weighed between 140 lbs. to 400lbs. I
pollinated my pumpkin on July 9th and it weighed 344lbs on Aug. 10th. So I
would say AnnaMaries pollination date of 7/6 is is also a good
representation in comparison to the charts as to what type of growth she
should experience as it relates to time.

Between Aug. 10th and Sept. 5th the growth chart over time shows
substantial weight gain averaging 25 to 27 lbs. per day. I would venture to
say this is the peak growth period for these 8 pumpkins.

Between Sept. 5th and Oct. 1st the pumpkins began to slow to what appears
to be about 10 to 12 lbs a day or less, then flatlined or stopped growing
beyond this.

Hope this helps, this about the best job I can do with limited records from
years past as this is my first year! Please feel free to jump in and
correct me if my interpretation of these charts is in error or if I have
stopped making sense!
