Re: Jarrahdale Pumpkin
Hi George
Info on the Jarrahdale Pumpkin - they are a thick flat semi-ribbed grey
skinned pumpkin, with deep orange flesh. Jarradale's can be susceptible
to downy mildew. They store well. Good for baking. One of the most
popular commercially grown pumpkins in Australia. Should not be picked
early. Love best long hot summers whilst growing, the rule goes the
deeper the orange flesh, the better the eating. They need a fair bit of
room, vines like to wander. The fruit mature in 18 sunny weeks to 22
cooler weeks, and weigh around the 10 to 12 lb mark. Doesn't grow so
well in cooler areas, about 6 lb.
Other popular varieties commonly grown in Australia are Queensland Blue
(these are similar to Jarradales, but keep better), Triamble, Ironbark
just to name a few. If anyone wants to try a seed or two, I am happy to
send over some pkts for distribution.
Don't hesitate to contact me if I can provide further information.
All the best, Wendy Stayner (Australia)
