Not sure what "pumpkin etching" is, but if you mean what I think you do,
that is lightly carving your name onto the skin of the pumpkin, I'd just go
ahead, as long as you aren't trying for a world's record pumpkin or
anything. With a decent wood-carving tool or two you can do this at any
time, even after harvest.
