Well Mike, Jon & Gang,
It is 111degrees F here is sunny Moraga Calif, this most pleasant day. I
guess that is what I get for all my complaining about the cold weather.
That's OK just throw me from the ice box into the frying pan! I have
abandoned my 97' ice house pumpkin pollination tents this season. Last year
I covered the newly pollinated fruit with styrofoam cups, then put a 20 lb.
bag of crushed ice around the fruit, then covered them with a white plastic
pup tent. Well you know what, at 111F it doesn't work, the ice melts too
fast. I have converted to the Newly Designed Ice Block Pollination method!!!
This requires 3 - 7lb. blocks of ice positioned in a triangle around the
fruit, you cover the fruit with the styrofoam cup, then place all three
blocks in a triangle around the fruit so that it is not touching fruit nor
stem, built a little roof over the ice and cup using bamboo stakes. I found
my wifes new Egyptian Cotton Large bathroom towels work the best to keep the
cool ice affect retained within the strucure! Misters are working overtime
and I have algae growing on top of my dirt! As for my biggest pumpkin, well
I am not going to say this year, to small to tell yet
Best Regards to All!
Chris Andersen
