The other week ( or month) we had a short discussion on critters and birds. someone was thinking that birds ie- robins and others we nicking and marking up the pumpkins. I have a couple of robins that always hang around my patch - especially during and after watering. this is what i saw this morning. the robins were out again - i had just finished watering and was back in the house. the watering brings the worms up closer to the surface or even on top of the dirt. it also can make the bugs more active. the early morning sun was shinning on my pumpkin- the shade covers it when the sun gets higher. but - there were lots of little bugs on my pumpkin- it looked like they were basking in the sun - using the pumpkin as a "hot" rock so to speack. well the robins figured out that the bugs were on the pumpkins so they headed for it. a few bugs few away and the robins nabbed them. others held tight on the pumpkin - and the robins were picking them off. - they got a couple before i could run downstaris out side to scare them away- then i wiped all the bugs of my pumpkin- there were a few little nicks on it. so the birds will nick your pumpkin up alittle when they are going for the bugs that are on it.
