Carla,
Your pumpkin will last quit long as long as it is cool, dry, and free of any
broken skin. Last year I had a 70 lb pumpkin last from October to May. I kept it
in the garage on a piece of styrofoam.
As far a planting, use the guidelines for Atlantic Giants. 120 to 150 days. I live
in Southern California and I found that the best time for me to plant is around
June 1st.
Im sure Bakersfield gets colder at night so you may need to start a little earlier
and use a cold frame. I think April would be too soon.
