This is our first year growing AG's and we now have 4 pumpkins, 1 on each
vine. This weekend we trimmed off all the smaller pumpkins and are going
with the biggest, fastest growers! All 4 are bigger than a basketball but
haven't measured them yet. Will probably do that tonight. We are burying
vines, but are unsure when to dock the main vines so they don't get longer.
They are probably 15 - 20 feet now. Does it do any good to start picking
off the male flowers? The vines are still flowering profusely. Also, have
switche fertilizer formulas to higher potassium, magnesium, potash, and
lower nitrogen. Vines are wilting slightly during the heat of the day.
Also, Barb, I would love to have a few seeds. Haven't grown any crosses
yet, just the AG's but would love to have another strain to try.
Does anyone know when the weight off is in Everson, WA? I believe that is
the WPC site. Also, when is the weigh off at Remlinger Farms in Carnation
WA?
We have only had two smaller pumpkins abort so far. I think they were bee
pollinated though. They aborted when the size of a bowling ball. I noticed
they had stopped growing though. I tried moving a vine last night but it is
firmly implanted in the ground by the tendrils. Too late to try to move it
or not? When burying vines, do you bury every joint that has tendrils or do
you bury the whole length of the vine stems? Do you bury joints on
secondary vines?
Sorry about all the questions, but you guys are the experts. This is our
first time out, and I must say, if there were awards for greenery, the patch
is certainly impressive. I sorely underestimated how much vine there would
be and they have used up the pumpkin patch, gone through the corn, wiped out
the green beans, headed for the tomatoes, climbed the picknick bench and
crossed the lawn! Oh, well, at least we don't have to mow the lawn anymore.
We planted one vine in the flower bed in the front yard, hoping for a nice
big jack o'lantern potential. That vine has wrapped itself all the way
around the flower bed (with a little positioning help) but has decided the
grass is greener (crossing the neighbors driveway now). Luckily, we have
pumpkin compatible neighbors! There is a nice fat pumpkin on that vine that
is growing nicely!
I love reading all the trials and tribulations of the sport of pumpkin
growning. Keep it up as I am leaning a lot by lurking in the shadows of
this digest.
