Potassium -- and GROWTH vs. M ATURATION

Can anyone elucidate exactly what fertilizing with potassium
accomplishes in the pumpkin fruit?

I have been using a balanced 20-20-20. I have a nice sized (for me)
fruit and am considering switching to a fertilizer with more potassium.
However, I am wondering if that will be more likely to induce the fruit
to mature, i.e. stop growing, harden the skin and turn deeper orange.
Presumably we want the fruit to stay somewhat immature and actively
growing as long as possible -- at least this is the logic behind our
shade structures. Does potassium promote fruit GROWTH or MATURATION?
