The cracks you describe are just stretch marks of some sort. I have them
on my 500 pound squash, and have had them for about a month now.
Eventually, it will all become kinda like a netweork of cracks on the
surface, but should not go through to the cavity, as most pumpkins have
pretty thick walls. I have a picture on my webpage of the cracks, as you
describe them, please go to the garden page, and check it out. I have
one of the cracks, and another of a close up of the same picture,
showing upclose what they look like.
