Male flowers?

Is it common for the female to open before the males? I checked my
plants today and there is a nice sized female open and ready for the
male,,,,,but there has been no male ready yet to do the job. Is this
common? I guess this pumpkin will never see one pound, let alone 1000lb.
There is another three or four females almost ready to open maybe in the
next few days and I think by then plenty of males will show at the same
