Hello Shellie,
i lost the stump on july 24. acually i didn't lose it, i cut it out and
woefully tossed it into the alley!!i plant two plants in a 36 x 36 foot
plot.next year i will put all my eggs in one basket.only one plant in
the patch and let 2 pumpkins grow on different vines. As for parents of
the seed i am using. It's my own 431# seed from 1995. this is a kurt
herrmann 639# female crossed with glen brown's 923# male. the seed
produced 662# in 1996. it was some what disappointed because it taped
out at 334". on the way home it caved in.severe rot inside from a small
split earlier. this explained why it was so light! last year pumpkin
grew to only 274". again iowa weather was tough. very hot very dry.
leaves were literally burning right off do to the high fertility in my
soil. when we hit the scales we weighed 499.6#!!! so far all the
pumpkins from this seed are very nicely shaped and very orange. this
year looks like it should be the same.
as for size of plant, i counted 11 side vines on each side of the
main and each run out about 9 to 11 feet. one runs out in the grass
about 20' why I don't really know!!were talking some where around 150 to
200 leaves and i cut out 8 leaves tonight to help stop some type of
fungus . I really can't afford to lose any more. last years weighed
about 80 pounds heavy this is encouraging.every one at the Anamosa
weigh-off were coming in 5 to 10% light.i hope this helps. thanks for
the interest!!
the Carlsons Dan and Beth
