  Always patch it with a fungicide.  I would never just cut a fruit off.  If 
I were you I would patch it, then keep measureing, if it slows way down or 
stops, you can be sure it cracked and is on the way to rot.  But don't just 
go off a days measurements.  Be sure.  Give it a week or so
